First open water on Baikal appeared on the 17th of April. Since 27 of April we were observing flocks of wagtails by 15-40 birds feeding on the melting ice along the shore. It was mixed flocks with mainly White Wagtails (Motacilla alba) with some Citrine (Motacilla citrinela) and Grey (Motacilla cinerea) Wagtails and River Pipits (Anthus spinoletta).

First wader
which we saw this year was Woodcock
(Scolopax rusticola). Usually Lapwings
(Vanellus vanellus) are the earliest but this year we observed flock of 50
birds resting on the field only on the 1st of May.

On the 1st
of May we heard sound of waves on the Lake and yesterday it was first strong
storm. Now in our area Baikal is free of ice but on the northern part it will
stay till end of May – beginning of June.
First observations of the species. Birds which are common on migration and are discovered quickly after
appearing are marked with blue color.
